3. Uncertified particleboard tower with cheap synthetic rope ($34) By week 5, visible sawdust accumulated at the base from internal particleboard breakdown under the base anchor screws — a genuine air-quality concern. The synthetic rope frayed and two cats avoided it entirely by week 6.
4. Uncertified solid wood (unverified sourcing) with sisal ($61) Structurally comparable to the FSC pine tower, but with no way to verify the wood wasn't sourced from unsustainable logging.
5. Cardboard-and-recycled-paper scratcher (flat, not a post) ($16) Excellent for cats who prefer horizontal scratching, made from 100% recycled paperboard, fully compostable at end of life.
